Unexpected Spawn

“The library maps of Ab'Dendriel swore that corridor held only three orcs. The fourth leapt from my blind spot and shattered my shield. Never place all your trust in an old map.” — A knight after exploring Orc Fortress.

Unexpected Spawn

The hunting grounds of RUBERA remain faithful to their classic foundations, but familiarity should not make the world entirely predictable.

When an eligible creature returns through its natural respawn, an additional monster of the same species may occasionally appear on a nearby tile. It is not a raid or a second fixed spawn. It is a brief change to an encounter you may have faced many times before.

Sometimes, the cave has one more.

How It Works

  • The chance is evaluated when an eligible monster respawns naturally.
  • Each natural respawn represents a new independent opportunity.
  • Current chance: 2% per eligible respawn.
  • The initial map load does not activate the system.
  • Monsters created artificially by scripts do not activate the system.
  • Summons do not activate the system.
  • Monsters with a Mutation or Dark Resurrection do not activate the system.
  • No player needs to be nearby at the moment of respawn.
  • The system does not use a global scan of players or monsters.
  • No permanent record of the area, monster or CID is kept.
  • There is no regional cooldown.
  • The same area may receive another Unexpected Spawn in the future, provided a new natural respawn occurs and all conditions are met.

Creating the Extra Monster

When the event occurs:

  • Only one extra monster is created.
  • The extra is the same species as the monster that respawned.
  • It appears on one of the eight available neighboring SQMs.
  • The SQM must be valid, walkable, unoccupied and outside a Protection Zone.
  • The only visual effect used is a discreet POFF.
  • There is no chat message, channel message, production server log, yell, boss bar, minimap marker, questlog entry or overlay.
  • The extra has no skull or special loot.

Density Control

Density is checked within a 5×5 SQM area centered on the natural respawn point.

The calculation includes:

  • All monsters already present in the area.
  • The natural monster that is returning.
  • The possible extra monster.

The intended final limit is 6 monsters within the 5×5 area.

In practice:

  • With up to 4 monsters already present, the natural monster and the extra may enter, reaching a maximum of 6.
  • With 5 or more monsters present, the extra is blocked.
  • The natural monster is never canceled by the system.
  • Summons, Mutations, resurrected monsters and previous extras present in the area also count toward density.

This limit prevents sequences of extras in an already crowded room without making the feature practically nonexistent.

Relationship with Other Systems

Monster Mutations

The extra is created artificially and therefore does not receive a Mutation.

A natural monster that has already received a Mutation also cannot generate an Unexpected Spawn.

Dark Resurrection

The extra is not immune to Dark Resurrection.

If its species is on the Dark Resurrection whitelist, it may still resurrect normally after being killed.

Bestiary

Killing the extra counts normally toward the Relic Bestiary, provided its species belongs to the catalog.

Repeating in the Same Area

The event does not permanently mark the area.

  1. A Rotworm respawns naturally.
  2. The 2% roll succeeds and a second Rotworm appears.
  3. The player kills the monsters.
  4. After the normal respawn time, the slot generates another Rotworm.
  5. The system recalculates density and performs a new 2% roll.
  6. A new Unexpected Spawn may occur in the same area.

If only the extra is killed, there is no new roll because the natural monster still occupies the slot.

If the natural monster is killed while the extra remains alive, the slot may respawn again. The surviving extra will be included in the density protection.
